black, grey, and rift oak small kitchen

Custom Kitchen Renovation, Oakville

We took a small, dated kitchen and modernized the space, making each cabinet purposeful.

When the clients approached us, their kitchen was dated and didn't have functional storage. They were renovating their home and were looking to improve their kitchen aesthetic and function.

The Design Approach

The client's old kitchen didn't fit their style and only had one bank-of-drawers. In addition, in the middle of the kitchen was a tiny island that blocked the flow of traffic. Our goal was to create a visually pleasing kitchen and improve the function of the kitchen to include better storage.

The Concept

Our clients knew they didn't want a classic white kitchen. They wanted texture, colour, and contrasting materials throughout the space. Combining three finishes in a small kitchen (while still creating flow throughout) is always a challenge, but we love a good challenge.

We chose a light grey finish for a softer feel than white. The maple wood tones (which were a compromise to white rift oak to save costs) warm up the space and contrast with the black in the range hood and back of the island, along with the black metal on the floating shelves.

We designed each wall of the kitchen to have a specific focal point. From the custom range hood to the floating shelves with metal brackets to the tall glass cabinet with maple accents. One of our favourite features of this kitchen is the beautiful, tall glass cabinet. The living room is opposite the kitchen, and our clients didn't want a wall of cabinetry that would make the space feel closed. Instead, we created the corner glass cabinet that pulls you into the kitchen.

The Purpose

Every client wants an island with seating, no matter how it negatively impacts their space. Our initial proposal included several unique layouts, including one with a floating island. In this case, the best solution for the kitchen was to incorporate a peninsula with seating, which in many homes can be effective.

Our client wasn't afraid of open storage (and was open to the idea, as we incorporated such great storage throughout the rest of the kitchen). Although the kitchen is smaller, it has great storage. From the cat food drawer to the tray dividers, to the multiple spice pullouts to the 2-tier cutlery drawer. Each cabinet is designed with a specific purpose.

Design Tip:

If you have a small space, stay flexible. Get your mind off having a specific layout (such as needing an island), and allow your kitchen designer to create a purposeful space. Be specific about your storage needs so you don't regret your decision later.

The Final Results

We love how the space came together. We love the colour combination, the creative use of mixed materials that bring warmth into the kitchen, and how each cabinet is designed with a purpose.
