MID-CENTURY MODERN KITCHEN TRANSFORMATION, CAMBRIDGE

This mid-century modern kitchen underwent a dramatic transformation, shifting from a dark, enclosed space into an open, airy galley kitchen that harmonizes with the home’s architectural style. Originally a U-shaped layout with no island, the redesign involved removing walls to create a seamless flow between the kitchen, dining area, and breakfast nook. The updated space embraces warm wood tones, natural light, and functional elegance, enhancing both the home's aesthetic and practicality. Thoughtful design elements maximize storage and workspace while maintaining a sleek, uncluttered look true to mid-century modern principles.

The design details of Project Corwin

The Details

The new kitchen showcases a striking two-toned cabinetry design, with warm white upper cabinets that brighten the space and natural walnut lower cabinets that ground it with rich, organic texture. The cabinetry features integrated finger pulls for a seamless, minimalist aesthetic, while crisp white quartz countertops provide a durable and timeless work surface. A central walnut island serves as a functional prep area, offering drawer storage on one side and open shelving on the other for easy access to cookbooks and appliances. The range hood, custom-crafted with a textured plaster surround, adds sculptural elegance and a subtle focal point to the room.

This open galley layout seamlessly connects the formal dining area on one side with a cozy breakfast nook on the other. The breakfast nook includes a custom-built corner banquette with fabric seat cushions crafted by our sister company, Vogel, for both comfort and style. Hidden storage is integrated within the banquette’s lift-top benches, providing additional storage space. A unique feature within the banquette is a hidden dog bowl station, built into a concealed end drawer with press-and-release hardware. Designed to fit the homeowner’s pet’s favourite bowls—one for food and one for water—this clever addition keeps the space tidy and pet-friendly.

The Materials

High-quality materials were carefully selected to enhance the kitchen’s mid-century modern character while ensuring long-lasting durability. The lower cabinetry is crafted from vertical grain natural walnut, offering warmth and depth, while the upper cabinetry is finished in a soft, warm white for a light and airy contrast. The countertops are crisp white quartz, providing a sleek and low-maintenance surface.

The breakfast nook cabinetry complements the kitchen design, with additional pantry storage and a dedicated broom storage slot for easy access. The corner banquette features venting in the base, allowing proper airflow from the HVAC vents beneath the bench to ensure optimal temperature control and comfort. These thoughtful details, combined with the open-concept layout, bring new life to this mid-century modern home, making it a beautiful and functional space for years to come.
